SPAIN
These photographs were all shot in 1964 with a Rolleiflex. Franco ruled. Spain was still recovering from the ravages of civil war.Life hadn't changed much in the interim thirty years. Much of the populous was still in mourning. The prevailing color was black. The Guardia Civil were ever present. Man and beast power were more in use than machines.
My former wife and I lived for three months in a circular Phoenician watch tower on her aunt's property on Ibiza. And then wandered for a month on the mainland. I returned for the first time nine years ago.
It was a happier, more colorful place, good cafes and tapas bars---and mostly shed of its widow's weeds. But somehow less photogenic.
